Laboratory water with bacteriostatic preservative · Updated

Water containing a bacteriostatic preservative, supplied as a laboratory consumable. What distinguishes it from other laboratory water is composition, not purity.

Identity

Sequence and molecular weight do not apply — this is a laboratory consumable rather than a compound. What matters instead is the preservative present, its concentration, and the sterility and endotoxin results, all of which belong on the certificate for the lot.

What the analysis should cover

  • Preservative identity and concentration. This is the single figure that distinguishes bacteriostatic water from other grades, and it belongs on the certificate rather than being assumed from the name.
  • Sterility, established by incubation in growth media over a defined period.
  • Bacterial endotoxin, which is a separate question from sterility — endotoxin survives filtration and heat, so a sterile result does not imply a low endotoxin result.
  • Container closure integrity, since a multiple-withdrawal container depends on its closure to remain what the certificate says it is.

How to read a certificate of analysis covers what each of these measurements establishes.

Handling and stability

  • Stored at controlled room temperature in the sealed container as supplied; refrigeration is not required and freezing is not appropriate for an aqueous product.
  • Protected from light, in line with the container it is supplied in.
  • The closure is the component doing the work over time. A container whose seal has been compromised no longer matches its certificate, regardless of how the contents look.
  • Discard dates for opened containers follow the preservative system rather than the water, which is why the preservative concentration is the figure to know.

Why peptides ship freeze-dried sets out the reasoning behind these conditions.
